THE PROJECT
Home to different families and people, the dwelling is an example of communal living in the Alps.
Despite the rigorous legal restrictions, the post-modern transformation of rural typologies led to the creative development of the specific colours, materials, and overall sensual experience of the dwelling of Cregua.
Drawing on local and partially lost knowledge of the valley and Ticino’s typical ‘rustico’ typologies as an architectural foundation, the further development of a respectful and sustainable relationship with nature is key to this project.
The longevity of the building structures is guaranteed by the interconnected common pathways, which remain open to the public and are part of the natural shared space of the valley. Through the interweaving paths and levels, the estate becomes in a way embedded into the soil of the mountain that it beholds.
To build for centuries is essential to this newly interpreted vernacular style, which remains transformable and gives possibility to a variety of usages, tying together common and individual. The phenomenological expression of the natural materials finds it’s new aesthetic and functional expression.
